A foundation for Sagamore Hills Elementary School doesn't exist (as of 2016-02), but is being considered.

What[edit]

What is a foundation anyway?

Why[edit]

New funding options become available. Currently, the only way the school can be supported financially is by the Sagamore Hills Elementary School PTA, being a tax-exempt non-profit (501(c)(3)), the ways in which the money can be raised, managed, and spent, are limited. [expand]

Why not[edit]

We don't have the resources (volunteers) (a concern mentioned at the 2014-03-04 PTA Board meeting)

Purpose[edit]

  • "pay teachers for foreign language instruction and technology instruction" (Suzi Wilki, 2015-01)
  • (Lara Baldwin, 2015-01)
    • more ipads! more laptops!
    • better playground, even handicap accessible!
    • painting the inside and outside of the school!
    • update the bathrooms!
    • supplement STEM committee teachers' salaries! (they work after school for free, and they're doing such an amazing job!)
    • apply and get grants for wonderful things that our school and students and teachers need!
  • Technology education (John Lenz, 2012)

PTA/Foundation- discussion of why we need PTA if we have a Foundation (and vice versa)... Foundation’s benefit is that corporations can donate to a Foundation and we have more flexibility for spending the funds we raise (in future school year), however our school currently is spread very thin with volunteers and we are concerned that adding another group that requires more volunteers...Setting up a Foundation has required full time attention at many of the schools we’ve interviewed (ex: Fernbank-Margaret Lesesne). Our school seems as if it has a great story for corporate grants, however we would still need leadership to find out whether this is truly the case... and if it warrants making a foundation the priority currently.

The Briarlake Foundation was formed in 2010. The foundation is focused on developing an atmosphere of innovative teaching and challenging programs to maximize each child's potential and foster a life-long desire for learning. With the cooperation of parents, teachers, students, and the community, the Briarlake Elementary School Foundation will support this mission by providing financial assistance for faculty enrichment programs, specialty coaches, and increasing access to technology for students and faculty.
